Dear Parents/ Carers,
A warm welcome back to the final half term of the year, hope you and your families had a relaxing half term break. We are almost at the end of this academic year and this final term we again have some interesting and stimulating cross curricular texts and topics for children to enjoy learning. Please find more information below.
In English for summer half term 2, we will be focusing on another text from The Power of Reading Programme to develop our literacy skills. We will be studying: Zeraffa Giraffa by Dianne Hofmeyr.
Below is a little bit about this book:
A picture book inspired by the true story of a giraffe sent as a gift to the King of France by the Great Pasha of Egypt in the 1820s. The exquisitely composed pictures show the different stages of the journey made by Zeraffa, accompanied by her keeper, the young boy Atir. On arrival in Marseilles, it becomes apparent that the only practical way to get Zeraffa to her destination is to walk the 550 miles to Paris where she becomes much admired and inspires some extraordinary fashions. This beautiful book forms the basis for children to explore the landscapes, cultures and environments through which Zeraffa passes and maps out her journey.
Here are some of the learning aims of this teaching sequence:
To talk confidently about picture books and responses individual to them
To explore important themes of courage, perseverance and compassion
To explore the story through a variety of teaching approaches including drama and role-play
To write in role from more than one perspective
IPC- Topic Overview:
We will use the IPC (International Primary Curriculum) to cover children’s History and Geography targets. The Topic for Summer Half Term 2 is ‘Buildings’. Here are some of the Geography and History targets that we will be covering during this module:

Art and Music:
Art and Music will be taught on a block basis once each term by Specialist teachers during the class teacher’s PPA time. This term these subjects will be taking place on Wednesday.
PE will be taking place this term on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday mornings. Tuesday will be Indoor PE and Wednesday will be Outdoor PE. Children are expected to have the correct PE kit.
This term our science topic is Summer. We will be looking at changes in the environment during this season and how it differs to Winter and Autumn.
Homework, Reading and Library Expectations:
Homework expectations are the same as last term, homework will be given out on Fridays and is expected to be handed in on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. All children are expected to complete their homework to the best of the ability as well as practising their phonics sounds. Children’s’ class reading books will be changed on a weekly basis according to their reading timetable. The class also has the opportunity to go to the school library every Friday and choose a book of their choice to take home and read, please remember to send in your child’s library book every Friday!
